The question

Is my boycotting my father – after I discovered his involvement in suspicious relationships, his neglect of prayer, and his deteriorating financial situation, which forced me to quit my studies and work to support my mother – considered an act of disobedience to parents (ʿuqūq), or is what he did disobedience itself? And how should I deal with him given my feelings of contempt and hatred towards him, knowing that Allah commanded us to turn away from whoever turns away from His remembrance?

The answer

Allah has commanded us to be dutiful to our parents, and this is one of the greatest obligations after faith. Righteousness towards one's parent is not contingent upon their piety; rather, it is a response to Allah's command and a hope for His reward. Allah the Almighty says: "But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness." [Luqman: 15].

A believer should look upon those who commit sins with compassion and recognize Allah's blessing upon them. Their heart should be broad with mercy towards them, and they should hope for their guidance and repentance, while still denouncing the evil. They should advise their parent gently, seek assistance from someone who can advise them, and supplicate for their guidance.
