Is the prohibition against putting one's hand in a vessel before washing it applicable to any vessel, or only to a water vessel? What is the definition of a vessel? And how did the Companions perform ablution (wudu), ghusl (ritual bath), and drink in the absence of taps?

Muslim narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When one of you wakes up from his sleep, he should not put his hand into the vessel until he has washed it three times, for he does not know where his hand spent the night." The "vessel" here refers to water prepared for ablution (wudu’). This prohibition is for purification (tanzih), not for absolute prohibition (tahrim). As for wiping the head in wudu’ and washing it in janabah (definition) (major ritual impurity), authentic hadiths have shown the description of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wudu’ and his wiping of his head, and washing it three times for janabah. The water sources during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were from the wells scattered in the orchards of Madinah.
