What is the obligatory Zakat on a monthly salary of 8,500 Qatari Riyals for a person who has been working since 2017?
Zakat is an obligatory duty on wealth that has reached the nisab (minimum threshold) and on which a full lunar year (hawl) has passed. The nisab for banknotes is the equivalent of 85 grams of pure gold or 595 grams of pure silver, and a quarter of a tenth (2.5%) is what must be given.
Any portion of the salary on which a full year has not passed is not subject to Zakat. However, any portion that has reached the nisab and on which a full year has passed is subject to Zakat.
The Zakat payer has two options: either to assign an independent hawl for each new installment of the salary, or to pay Zakat on all the money he possesses when the hawl passes on the first nisab he acquired.
If it is difficult to determine the exact time the nisab was completed and the amount of the saved balance, then the Muslim should strive and investigate to the best of his ability, in accordance with the words of Allah Almighty: "Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity."
