Is it permissible to slaughter a calf for the 'Aqiqah for a son instead of two sheep?

The Sunnah is to sacrifice two sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl as 'aqiqah. Scholars have differed on the permissibility of sacrificing camels and cows for 'aqiqah. The majority of scholars hold it to be permissible, but it is preferable for it to be from sheep, following the Sunnah. The conditions for 'aqiqah are the same as those for udhiyah, including that a cow must have completed two years and entered its third.
