Which of the scholars' opinions is most preponderant regarding the determination of Laylat al-Qadr, and is it absolutely the best of nights, and what is the view on those who prefer the night of Isra' over it?

Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree) is a great and blessed night, in which Allah revealed the Quran. It is better than a thousand months, and during it, what will transpire in the year is decreed. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, exerted effort in seeking it during the last ten nights of Ramadan.

As for preferring one over the other between Laylat al-Qadr and Laylat al-Isra (the Night Journey), Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim held that Laylat al-Isra is superior with regard to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while Laylat al-Qadr is superior with regard to the Ummah. We have been legislated to strive in worship during Laylat al-Qadr, unlike Laylat al-Isra, for which we have not been legislated to celebrate or dedicate specific acts of worship.

It has not been authentically established in which month or on which night Laylat al-Isra occurred, whereas Laylat al-Qadr is definitely in Ramadan, and it is most likely in its last ten nights. This indicates that Laylat al-Qadr is the night in which one should exert effort. Celebrating Laylat al-Isra is an innovation that neither Allah nor His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, legislated.
