Why is the deceased not prayed over inside the mosque?

Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on praying the funeral prayer in the mosque. Al-Shafi'i, Ahmad, and Ishaq permitted it without dislike, citing the action of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who prayed over Suhail bin Bayda inside the mosque.

Abu Hanifa and Malik, however, held it to be disliked, citing the hadith: "Whoever prays over a funeral in the mosque, there is nothing for him." This hadith has been refuted due to its weakness, and because the wording found in well-known versions is "there is nothing upon him" (i.e., no sin). Even if it were authentic, it would be interpreted as a reduction in reward for one who did not follow the funeral to the graveyard.

The preponderant view is the permissibility of praying over a funeral in the mosque, in imitation of the Prophet's action, peace and blessings be upon him.
