The question

How sound is the hadith: "Indeed, Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, says: 'If I test a believing servant of Mine and he praises Me for what I have tested him with, then he will rise from that resting place of his as on the day his mother gave birth to him, free of sins.' And the Lord, Blessed and Exalted be He, says: 'I have restrained My servant and tested him, so record for him what you used to record for him when he was healthy'"?

The answer

The aforementioned hadith was narrated by Ahmad, Al-Tabarani, Abu Ya'la, and others with a hasan (good) chain, sahih li ghayrihi (authentic due to external corroboration), as the hadith included two narrators. The first is Isma'il ibn Ayyash, whom Ibn Ma'in declared trustworthy, while Al-Nasa'i deemed him weak. However, his narrations are sound when he narrates from the people of Sham, which is the case here. He explicitly stated 'haddathana' (he narrated to us) in some narrations despite being accused of tadlis (concealment). As for the second narrator, Rashid ibn Dawud Al-San'ani, Ibn Ma'in declared him trustworthy, while Al-Daraqutni deemed him weak. His narrations are hasan (good) unless he is the sole narrator.

The hadith has been authenticated by Ibn Kathir and Al-Albani. It has corroborating narrations that elevate it to the degree of sahih li ghayrihi (authentic due to external corroboration). Among these are narrations from Aisha, Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, Abu Hurairah, and Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with them, stating that calamities expiate sins. The second part of the hadith is corroborated by the hadith of Abu Musa narrated by Al-Bukhari, and the hadith of Abdullah ibn Amr, which state that a sick or traveling servant is credited with the reward of what he used to do when he was healthy and resident.
