Is it permissible for a wife to use contraception without her husband's permission, and is it permissible for the husband to seek divorce if the wife insists on doing so?

One of the important objectives of marriage is to have offspring and increase progeny, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Marry the affectionate and fertile one, for I will boast of your numbers." It is not permissible to practice coitus interruptus with a free woman except with her permission, due to her right to have children.

If coitus interruptus is prohibited for the husband unless he has his wife's permission, then it is even more so for the wife. Therefore, it is not permissible for a woman to prevent pregnancy except with her husband's permission and provided that the Islamic guidelines are met. If the wife insists on preventing pregnancy without her husband's permission, and she knows of his disapproval, then she is disobedient and recalcitrant (nashiz).

The wife should abandon the use of contraceptives and respond to her husband. If she insists on her stance, there is no dislike in divorcing her.
