Is a divorce pronounced by the husband in jest considered a divorce?

Divorce occurs when the husband says to his wife: "You are divorced." The divorce of one who is jesting is considered as serious. If this pronouncement of divorce is the third, then the wife has become irrevocably divorced (baynunah kubra), and she is not lawful for him until she marries another husband. The husband's forgetfulness of this carries no weight. She must separate from him if she is certain that he uttered the third pronouncement of divorce. Islam warns against taking divorce lightly or making a mockery of it, as in the Almighty's saying: "And do not take the verses of Allah in jest."
