The answer

The husband's statement to his wife, "You are divorced," effects a divorce. The divorce of one who jokes is as valid as the divorce of one who is serious. If this divorce is the third one, then she has become irrevocably separated from you with a major divorce (baynunah kubra), and she is not lawful for him until she marries another husband. His forgetting about it carries no weight. It is obligatory for you to separate from him. It is dangerous to be lenient with divorce or to treat it as a subject for joking and play, for Allah says: "And do not take the verses of Allah in jest."
