Is it possible for people who performed righteous deeds to have a bad ending or not enter Paradise, despite His—the Almighty’s—saying: "Indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of any who did well in deeds"?

It is mentioned in the Hadith that a servant may perform the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is only an arm's length between him and it, then the decree overtakes him, and he performs the deeds of the people of the Fire and enters it. This does not contradict Allah's saying: (Indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of any who did well in deeds), because whoever performs the deeds of the people of the Fire and dies upon that, he is the one who caused the frustration of his deeds and the loss of his reward due to the sins he committed. This is due to an inner hidden vice that people are unaware of, and that hidden trait leads to a bad ending at death.

This meaning makes the heart attached to Allah the Almighty, so the servant does not rely on his deeds, nor does he depend on obedience. Rather, he remains fearful and hopeful, hoping for his Lord's grace, fearing the perils of his soul that incites evil, and fearing that he might regress before his death, thus ending with evil. For this reason, the righteous predecessors feared bad endings, and their anxiety and distress regarding hypocrisy intensified. And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, frequently supplicated: (O Turner of hearts, keep my heart steadfast on Your religion).
