Is it permissible to take one riyal from whoever is late for class, or to obligate whoever did not do their homework to feed others, with the intention of motivation, provided that these funds are spent on food for everyone?

This type of competition for money is forbidden by Islamic law, except in specific cases: archery, camel racing, and horse racing. This is based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "There is no prize except in archery, or hoof (camel/horse racing)." Some jurists have analogized to this competitions for memorizing the Quran, Hadith, Fiqh, and other beneficial sciences. If the knowledge is of this nature, then competition for a prize is permissible; otherwise, it is not.
