Is my father required to offer a sacrifice due to an error at the beginning of the arrival tawaf (circumambulation) during Hajj at-Tamattu‘, where he started the tawaf from the Iraqi Corner and completed seven circuits, ending at the same point, knowing that he performed two valid voluntary tawafs on the same day?

If the father performed Hajj as a Mutamatti‘ (one who performs Umrah then Hajj in the same journey), his circumambulation (tawaf) for Umrah would not count the first circuit if he started it after passing the Black Stone. This circuit would be void, and the second circuit would become the first.

If the father completed seven circuits without counting the voided first circuit, his tawaf is valid. However, if he considered the incomplete circuit among the seven, then his tawaf is invalid according to the majority of scholars.

A voluntary tawaf cannot substitute for the tawaf of Umrah, and the ritual running (sa'y) after an invalid tawaf is not valid.

The Hanafis hold that his tamattu‘ and Hajj are valid if he entered into the state of ihram for Hajj after performing most of the Umrah tawaf circuits, and he owes a compensatory sacrifice (dam) for the deficiency in the seventh circuit.

Acting upon a less preferred opinion after an event has occurred and it is difficult to rectify it is permitted by many scholars.

Scholars other than the Hanafis differed regarding the validity of the Mutamatti‘'s ihram for Hajj in this situation: The Maliki school, in their relied-upon view, held that it is permissible to combine Hajj with Umrah before completing the tawaf, thereby becoming a Qarin (one who performs Hajj and Umrah together). However, the Shafi‘is and some Malikis did not permit combining Hajj with Umrah after commencing the tawaf.

As for the Hanbalis, they held that it is not valid to combine Hajj with Umrah after commencing the tawaf, except for one who has a sacrificial animal (hady) with him, in which case he becomes a Qarin.
