Is it permissible to drink during the Friday sermon, and is it permissible to leave one's place to get water if it is not available next to the preacher?

Some scholars dislike drinking during the khutbah (sermon) if it produces a sound, because it resembles fiddling with pebbles, which is considered a form of idle talk (laghw). Others see no harm in it when there is intense thirst. As for leaving to get a drink during the khutbah, the matter is more serious, due to the distraction from listening to the sermon, breaking rows, and stepping over people's necks, which harms them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to someone who stepped over people's necks: "Sit down, for you have caused harm." Therefore, one should not leave to get a drink except out of necessity. It is forbidden according to the Maliki school if it entails stepping over the necks of those sitting after the khatib (preacher) has ascended the minbar.
