Is one sinful if he severs ties with his second-degree relatives to avoid their evil, such as envy, mockery, wishing ill, and their showing other than what they conceal, knowing that the one who severs ties did not wrong them and was supportive of them, but they responded to kindness with malice and treachery?

The womb (kinship tie) that is obligatory to maintain is, according to the preponderant opinion, every kinsperson with whom marriage is prohibited (mahram). Cutting these ties is among the major sins. The misbehavior of relatives does not permit severing ties with them, because the one who maintains ties is he who connects with his kin when they cut him off. However, if maintaining kinship ties results in certain harm, then it is not obligatory in that instance, and a beautiful avoidance (hagr jamil) is permissible if mixing with them leads to a deficiency in one's religion or causes harm.
