Ayat al-Kursi is the greatest verse in the Qur'an. It is incorrect that Ayat al-Kursi contains more than 17 names; rather, it contains only five of the Most Beautiful Names (Asma' al-Husna), which are: Allah, Al-Hayy (the Ever-Living), Al-Qayyum (the Self-Subsisting), Al-Ali (the Most High), and Al-Azim (the Most Great). "Allah" is the comprehensive name encompassing the meanings of divinity and all perfect attributes. "Al-Hayy" is He who possesses perfect, magnificent life. "Al-Qayyum" is He who subsists by Himself, is independent of His creation, and sustains all beings. "Al-Ali" indicates the affirmation of all meanings of loftiness for Allah in every respect (loftiness of essence, loftiness of status, loftiness of power). "Al-Azim" is He who embodies the attributes of greatness and majesty.
