Is it permissible to drink from a bottle or not?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is permissible to drink from a bottle, and evidence for this is the action of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, for it is authentically reported that "he drank from the mouth of a hanging waterskin while standing." However, it is preferable to avoid this and pour the water into a cup, because he, peace and blessings be upon him, "forbade drinking directly from the mouth of a waterskin." Scholars have reconciled his action and his prohibition by explaining that the prohibition is for discouragement (tanzih), and his action indicates permissibility. The wisdom behind the prohibition of drinking directly from the mouth of a waterskin is the fear of an insect entering the drinker's mouth or the water becoming putrid. This may not apply to drinking from a bottle.
