What is the ruling on photography and placing pictures in the home, and what are the types of forbidden and permissible pictures?

The fundamental principle is that depicting any living being is forbidden, whether it is a sculpted figure, a drawing, or a photograph, due to the authentic prophetic narrations that prohibit it and threaten severe punishment for its perpetrator. This is because it imitates Allah's creation and can lead to polytheism and discord, such as images of actresses and nude women.

Among the narrations mentioned concerning its prohibition are:

- On the authority of Ibn Abbas, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever makes an image in this world will be ordered to breathe a soul into it on the Day of Resurrection, but he will not be able to breathe a soul into it." - Also on his authority, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Every image-maker is in the Fire. For every image he made, a soul will be created for him, and it will punish him in Hell." - Ibn Abbas said: "If you must do so, then make trees and that which has no soul."

Scholars have issued fatwas prohibiting the keeping of images for remembrance because angels do not enter a house in which there is an image.
