Is it permissible for a polytheist or an infidel to touch or examine papers on which the Holy Quran is written, in order to repair a malfunction in a Quran printing machine, taking into account His saying, the Almighty: "None shall touch it save the purified?"

The majority of jurists are of the opinion that it is forbidden for a disbeliever to touch the Mushaf (definition) (copy of the Qur’an) and unlawful to enable him to do so, because there is a fear that he may desecrate it. Furthermore, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade traveling with the Qur’an to enemy territory, fearing it might fall into enemy hands.

However, a disbeliever is not prevented from hearing the Qur’an, and it is permissible to teach him the Qur’an if there is hope of his embracing Islam.

As for translations of the meanings of the Noble Qur’an, there is no harm in a disbeliever touching them, because the translation is an interpretation of the meanings of the Qur’an and does not carry the ruling of the Qur’an itself.

It is not permissible to print a page from the Mushaf to test a printing machine, as long as this can be done without using the Mushaf.
