Is a wife obligated to obey and care for her husband despite his abandonment and mistreatment of her for more than 10 years?
It is not permissible for the husband to abuse his wife or abandon her without a valid reason, and she has the right to demand her rights. If her husband abandons her, it is not permissible for the wife to abandon him. The husband must fear Allah concerning his wife, as Allah Almighty says: "And due to them [the wives] is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable." Some scholars have mentioned that there is no sin upon the wife if she treats her husband in the same way he treats her, based on His saying, the Almighty: "So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same way that he assaulted you," except in bed, where it is permissible for the husband to abandon his wife as a disciplinary measure, but it is not permissible for her to abandon him if he calls her, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "If a man calls his wife to his bed and she refuses, the angels curse her until morning." The advice for the wife is not to treat her husband in kind, as that would worsen the matter and affect the children. Rather, it is better to treat him with kindness and to be patient.
