Is the status of the wife's mother and obedience to her equal to the status of one's own mother and obedience to her?

There is no room for comparison between a mother and a mother-in-law (wife's mother); for the mother is the most deserving of people in righteousness and obedience, as long as it is not in disobedience to Allah. As for the wife's mother, her obedience is not obligatory, but kindness should be shown to her for the sake of good companionship with the wife.
