Is it permissible or forbidden to use utensils coated with silver water?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on a vessel plated with silver. Some have permitted it due to the small amount of silver in it (the Hanafis and the sounder opinion of the Shafi'is). Others have prohibited it because the reason for prohibiting the use of a pure silver vessel is present in one that is plated with it, even if in a small amount, such as breaking the hearts of the poor and restricting the two precious metals (gold and silver) (the Malikis and Hanbalis, and this is the more cautious and more absolving for one's responsibility). If the gilding is excessive such that something can be extracted from it by exposing it to fire, then it is definitively forbidden according to the Shafi'is. As for taking a vessel gilded with gold or silver, it is absolutely forbidden according to the Hanbalis, and likewise one that is inlaid, plated, or damascened.
