Is it permissible for a person to perform Hajj on behalf of another before performing Hajj for himself?

Scholars have differed regarding one who has not performed the obligatory Hajj for himself, whether it is permissible for him to perform Hajj on behalf of another. There are two opinions:

1. First Opinion: Permissibility. This was held by Abu Hanifa and Malik (though Malik restricted it to performing Hajj on behalf of the deceased, not the living). 2. Second Opinion: Non-permissibility unless he first performs Hajj for himself. This was held by Ash-Shafi'i and Ahmad, and they stated that if he performs Hajj on behalf of another, it becomes an obligatory Hajj for himself.

The preponderant opinion is the second one, based on the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to a man who had not performed Hajj for himself and wished to perform Hajj on behalf of Shubrumah: "Perform Hajj for yourself, then perform Hajj for Shubrumah."

Therefore, do not perform Hajj on behalf of your father until you have performed Hajj for yourself.
