The question

Is what the questioner is suffering from—distress, anxiety, and sorrow due to excessive contemplation of death, accompanied by physical and psychological symptoms—obsessive-compulsive disorder or evil eye and envy? Should he seek medical tests or ruqyah? Is what befell him an expiation for his sins? And what is the way to get rid of this?

The answer

We congratulate you on your interest in prayer and remembrance of Allah. We inform you that calamities expiate sins, as stated in a Hadith in Sahih Muslim. We advise you to ignore obsessive thoughts (waswasah), associate with righteous people, and utilize your time in seeking knowledge and serving the community. Presenting yourself to psychiatrists or legitimate ruqya practitioners is permissible, but beware of charlatans. You should supplicate, recite Surah Al-Fatihah, and drink Zamzam water, for it is a beneficial and proven remedy.
