What is the ruling on music, and is it considered among the major sins?

Some scholars, such as the author of Majma' al-Anhur from the Hanafis, considered listening to singing as a major sin, whether the listener was listening for himself or for others. He even considered singing a major sin if it was for entertaining oneself due to loneliness. This applies to forbidden singing. As for permissible singing, there is no harm in it.
