To distinguish between mani (seminal fluid) and madhy (pre-seminal fluid): Mani is a thick, white fluid that is discharged in gushes, with desire, and is followed by a feeling of exhaustion. Its smell resembles that of a palm spathe. As for madhy, it is a thin, clear, sticky fluid that is discharged upon arousal, not in gushes, and is not followed by exhaustion. One may not even feel its discharge.

Regarding secretions after sleep: 1. If you are certain it is mani, then a ritual bath (ghusl) is obligatory. 2. If you are certain it is madhy, then you must wash whatever parts of your clothes, body, and penis it touched. 3. If you are unsure about what you saw, you have the option to consider it mani, and thus perform ghusl, or consider it madhy, and suffice with washing the penis and performing ablution (wudu').
