The question

How can your statement that the Qur’an is created be interpreted, despite the Salaf considering the Qur’an to be the uncreated, eternal word of God, and deeming whoever describes it as such an infidel, citing sayings from figures like Wakee’, Ibn Khuzaymah, Imam Ahmad, and others, and what is mentioned in the interpretation of the verse (And there comes not to them any mention from their Lord [that is] renewed)?

The answer

Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah (Sunnis) did not say that the Qur’an is muhdath (originated/newly occurred) in the sense of being created. So, whoever says it is muhdath in this sense has said it is created, and this is the doctrine of the Jahmiyyah and the Mu’tazilah. However, applying the term “muhdath” to the Qur’an in the sense that it is speech with which Allah spoke by His will after He had not spoken it precisely, and that Allah speaks whenever He wills, this is permissible. For the Qur’an is not created; it is the speech of Allah subsisting in His essence. The Imams are agreed that Allah speaks by His will and power, and none of them said that the Qur’an is pre-eternal. And it is mentioned in the Holy Qur’an, the Almighty’s saying: "No fresh reminder comes to them from their Lord but they listen to it while they are at play." (Qur'an 21:2).
