What is the ruling on one who supplicates to Allah for death because they can no longer bear their illness and are tormenting those around them with their ill-treatment?

It is not permissible for a Muslim to wish for death due to harm that has befallen him. Rather, he must exercise patience and seek reward (from Allah), because Allah will provide him with relief and a way out, and he will attain a great reward for his patience, as stated in His (Allah's) saying: "Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good." (Quran 12:90) and "And do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of the mercy of Allah except the disbelieving people." (Quran 12:87). The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade wishing for death. If one must express such a sentiment, he should say: "O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and cause me to die if death is better for me." This supplication is an entrustment and submission to divine decree, and it is permissible in times of complaint and distress, although patience and submission are better and bring a greater reward.
