The blood discharged during the forty days (post-partum period) is considered nifas (post-natal bleeding), whether it occurs before or after the insertion of an IUD. If the bleeding extends beyond the forty days, then if it coincides with her regular menstrual cycle, it is considered hayd (menstrual blood). Otherwise, it is istihada (irregular non-menstrual bleeding), in which case the woman should fast and pray.
