Is it permissible to rent out part of a furnished residence to increase income and cover the original rent?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is permissible for someone who has rented a property to rent it out to another person, for the same rent, or more, or less, because he owns its usufruct, provided that the second tenant is similar to the first tenant in terms of use or less harmful. This is the view of the majority of jurists, including Imam Ahmad and Al-Shafi'i. Ibn Qudamah mentioned that the tenant is permitted to rent out the leased property for the same rent or more. The fatwas of the Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta' and Sheikh Salih Al-Fawzan explicitly state the permissibility of this, as long as there is no exploitation.
