How can one reconcile a husband's desire for privacy and reduction of financial burdens with the duty of honoring one's parents and avoiding disobedience to them, in light of frequent and prolonged hosting of relatives in the marital home?
The right of the husband takes precedence over others, and it is his right that his wife does not permit anyone to enter his house whom he dislikes. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "It is not lawful for a woman to fast while her husband is present except with his permission, nor to allow anyone into his house except with his permission." Imam Ahmad said: "Obedience to her husband is more obligatory upon her than obedience to her mother, unless he gives her permission."
Therefore, the wife should pray to Allah and rely on Him to solve her problem. She should not argue with her husband but rather agree with him. Then, she should strive to find solutions with him, reminding him of the virtues of generosity, honoring guests, maintaining kinship ties, and the excellence of charity. She can also convey her husband's point of view to her father or someone close to him.
The husband is justified in his annoyance, and his obedience must take precedence. It is not lawful for a guest to stay with a host in a way that causes hardship or sin for the host. She should understand this and convey it gently to her family.
