What is the authenticity of this supplication: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from an evil hour, an evil day, an evil night, an evil friend, and an evil neighbor. And I seek refuge in You from the two-faced and the two-tongued. And I seek refuge in You from Iblis, his offspring, and his devils. And I seek refuge in You from iron, fire, the road, and the hour of heedlessness. Our Lord, in You I have placed my trust, and You are the Lord of the Magnificent Throne. O Allah, I have fortified myself and all my household with the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, whom neither slumber nor sleep overtakes. And I have repelled evil from myself and from them, with no might or power except by Allah, the Most High, the Most Great. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from tears that exhaust me, and from worries that grieve me. O Allah, mend my heart, and expand my breast for me. I seek Your forgiveness, my Lord, for all sins and transgressions. My Lord, do not break my heart, and do not make any matter difficult for me"?
This supplication has not been narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, nor do we know of this wording from any of the Salaf. Some of its phrases are ثابتة (established) in the Sunnah, such as seeking refuge from an evil day, from falling (from a height), from being crushed by a falling building, from drowning, from burning, from the confusion of Satan at the time of death, and from dying with one's back turned (in retreat) or from being stung. Asking for the expansion of the chest, seeking refuge from Iblis, and seeking forgiveness are mentioned in many texts. As for seeking refuge from iron and the road, its reason is not apparent. The door of supplication is wide, and there is no harm in supplicating with good wording that does not contradict the Sharia, even though adhering to what is authenticated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is better.
