What is the ruling on uncovering the face of the deceased before a non-mahram at their burial?

The correct view is that uncovering the face of the deceased during burial is not from the Sunnah; rather, it goes against its apparent meaning. It is stated in the fatwas of the Permanent Committee that the default is to cover the face, like the rest of the body, unless the man was in a state of ihram, in which case his face is not covered. The questioner erred in what he did when burying his father, but he is excused due to his ignorance. It intercedes for him that some scholars have taken a lenient view on this matter, such as Ibn Uthaymeen, who mentioned that uncovering the face of the deceased when placed in the niche (lahd) has been reported from some of the Salaf, and that the matter in this regard is broad.
