The question

Is what happens to a person by way of intrusive thoughts (waswasa) concerning the Divine Self and the Prophet (peace be upon him) – which are interspersed with moments of pause and reflection before seeking refuge [with Allah] – considered among the self-talk (hadith al-nafs) that is divinely pardoned, or does this pause make him accountable? And is not uttering the two declarations of faith (Shahadatayn) when pondering such thoughts considered a sin?

The answer

What you experienced does not go beyond the forgiven self-talk (hadith al-nafs), and you are not held accountable for it, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, Allah has forgiven my nation for what they talk to themselves about, as long as they do not act upon it or speak of it." You are not liable for delaying the pronouncement of the Shahada or seeking refuge [with Allah], as long as you know that this is from the whispers of Satan.
