Is it better for a pregnant woman to fast or to break the fast?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

A pregnant woman is obligated to fast unless she fears for herself or her fetus, in which case she is permitted to break her fast. Ibn 'Abbas stated that pregnant and nursing women may break their fast and feed the poor if they fear for their children. Breaking the fast is permissible if fasting becomes difficult, obligatory if it causes harm to the pregnant woman or the fetus, and forbidden if fasting does not cause her hardship. If she is strong and energetic and her fetus is not affected, she must fast. However, if she cannot bear fasting due to the burden of pregnancy or weakness, she must break her fast, especially if the harm is to her fetus. The ruling for pregnant and nursing women is like that of a sick person: if fasting becomes difficult for them, it is legislated for them to break their fast and make up the missed days. Feeding the poor is not sufficient for them, based on the Almighty's saying: "But whoever among you is ill or on a journey, then [he must make up] an equal number of other days."
