What is the ruling on taking money without its owner's knowledge to settle debts, and is it permissible for the taker to seek God's forgiveness and ask Him to pay off the debt on his behalf if he does not possess the money to return it?

He who takes people's money by deceiving them, by feigning religiosity, must repent to Allah and regret what he has done. He is obliged to return the money to its owners or their heirs if they are deceased, and his repentance is not complete without that. If he is unable to return it, the debt remains his responsibility until Allah facilitates its repayment for him. It is hoped that Allah will settle it on his behalf if he dies while unable to pay and his repentance was sincere, based on the Almighty's saying: "Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity" and "So fear Allah as much as you are able."
