Was there an incident during the time of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, in which he forbade his Companions from continuing their fast because God feeds and waters him, and is it permissible to continue fasting until the pre-dawn meal (suhoor)?

What Al-Khatib mentioned about the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbidding continuous fasting (wisal), and that he himself practiced it, and that this was one of his unique prerogatives because his Lord fed him and gave him drink, and that he permitted wisal for whoever wished to do so until the time of sahar (pre-dawn meal), is correct and supported by authentic hadiths. Ahmad, Ishaq, Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Khuzaymah, and a group of Malikis have adopted the view that continuous fasting (wisal) until sahar is permissible. Most Shafi'is, however, have distinguished by saying that abstaining until sahar is not true wisal. The justification for the permissibility of continuous fasting (wisal) from one sahar to the next is what Al-Hafiz mentioned, though abandoning wisal is preferable, because the Sunnah is to hasten breaking the fast.
