What is the ruling on keeping animals like cats and monkeys at home for decorative purposes, and is it obligatory to refrain from visiting those who keep them if that is impermissible?

Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on raising monkeys. Some, like Al-Hattab, Al-Jazuli, and Ibn Yunus, prohibited it, arguing that selling it is unlawful, and whatever cannot be rightfully owned cannot be rightfully sold. They likened it to wine and swine.

Others, however, like Ibn Aqil, Al-Shafi'i, and Al-Khatib Al-Shirbini, permitted it, citing the permissibility of selling it if it has a benefit, such as guarding belongings, shops, or for security. They likened it to falcons, buzzards, and cheetahs.

The preferred view is the permissibility of raising monkeys if it is for a recognized benefit or interest; otherwise, it is not permissible.

Raising pets – in general – should not prevent friends from visiting. The visitor should advise their friends if their pet ownership is unlawful.
