Is it permissible to raise cats at home? Thank you.

It is permissible to keep cats at home, provided they are fed if confined, or allowed to go out to eat. This is because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, mentioned that a woman was tormented in Hellfire on account of a cat she confined, neither feeding it nor letting it go out to eat from the vermin of the earth. Cats are pure and not impure, as it has been reported that they are among the "circulators" and "circulatresses," and that they are part of household belongings, not rendering anything impure. However, their urine and droppings are considered impure by the majority of scholars, as they are from animals whose meat is not permissible to eat. Therefore, one must beware of them and purify anything they contaminate.
