Is it permissible for a mother to perform an 'Aqiqah for her adult, married, and independent son?

The preponderant opinion is that the 'aqiqah is a Sunnah and not obligatory. The 'aqiqah is addressed to the father exclusively. If the child reaches maturity and his father has not performed the 'aqiqah for him, then the 'aqiqah obligation falls away from the father. Some scholars have permitted others besides the father, and the son himself, to perform the 'aqiqah for himself after reaching maturity. Thus, it is permissible for the mother to voluntarily offer the 'aqiqah for her adult son.
