The question

Is it permissible to perform the 'aqiqah for children after they have reached puberty if the father's financial situation did not allow for it at the time of their birth, and is it permissible for the mother to perform 'aqiqah for herself using her husband's money if her father did not do it for her, and is it permissible for the father to perform 'aqiqah for himself if his father did not do it for him?

The answer

The 'Aqiqah is legislated as two sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl. It is recommended to perform it on the seventh day of the newborn's life, and it is permissible to perform it at any time before the child reaches puberty.

It is permissible for spouses to perform 'Aqiqah for themselves, and the preponderant opinion is the permissibility of performing 'Aqiqah for oneself even if the person has reached adulthood. There is no objection if the husband gives his wife money for her to perform 'Aqiqah for herself.

For the 'Aqiqah, only what is permissible for the Udhiyah (sacrifice) from livestock (behimat al-an'am) is sufficient.
