What can a son do regarding his father, whom he accidentally discovered to be committing indecencies (sodomy and drinking alcohol) despite his outwardly exemplary and respectable appearance in society, knowing that the son is unable to confront him due to barriers between them, and given that the father has been addicted to these acts for many years?

It is not permissible to accuse a father of major sins without evidence, nor is it correct to rely on the words of a wicked person. If the father is abandoning prayer, this is a grave matter, for prayer is the pillar of religion, and some scholars consider one who abandons it to be a disbeliever. The father must be advised and warned of the consequences of abandoning prayer, and urged to repent. Furthermore, the relationship with the wicked young man must be severed, and the company of good people sought, for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do not accompany anyone but a believer."
