The question

Is depositing 50 dinars monthly into a savings bank for 5 years, then receiving 18,0 dinars and later paying back 21,0 dinars (an increase of 3,0 dinars), considered usury, given the depositor's need for the money to build a home?

The answer

Dealing with the aforementioned bank involves two forbidden matters:

1. What is known as the issue of "lend me, and I will lend you," whereby a person deposits an amount in the bank in exchange for the bank lending him another amount. 2. The person borrows an amount and repays more than that, which is considered explicit usurious interest.

It is not permissible to deal with usurious banks or deposit money in them unless there is an urgent necessity. In such a case, a current account is opened, and the usurious interest is disposed of by spending it on general Muslim welfare.
