The question

Is there scholarly consensus that cursing and insulting the Prophet (peace be upon him) are among the major sins, given his infallibility from major sins but not minor ones?

The answer

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was a mercy to the worlds and was not one to curse. However, he might become angry if the sanctities of Allah were violated, in which case he would curse those whom he deemed deserving, but this was rare. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked his Lord to make his curses and insults, when directed at someone undeserving, a purification, a reward, and a mercy for that person. This is because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, judged by outward appearances, while Allah handles what is hidden, or perhaps such curses were not intentional but rather a customary expression among Arabs.
