Is it obligatory to make up prayers missed due to negligence, or can they be compensated for by supererogatory prayers?

Prayer is great and holds a significant status in Islam. Regarding one who neglects prayer out of laziness, scholars have differed on whether making it up is obligatory for him. The majority of scholars are of the opinion that making it up is obligatory, and this is the most preponderant view. Voluntary (nafilah) prayers do not suffice for making up obligatory (fard) prayers. Rather, drawing near to Allah through voluntary prayers comes after performing the obligatory ones, because they are the best means by which one can draw near to Allah the Almighty.
