Does a triple divorce, witnessed by people, take effect if it was for trivial reasons, and what are its consequences?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If a husband divorces his wife with three pronouncements, she becomes irrevocably divorced from him, and she is not lawful for him again until she marries another husband, and he consummates the marriage with her, then he separates from her, and her 'iddah (waiting period) ends.

If the husband denies the occurrence of the divorce, but the wife is certain that he divorced her with three pronouncements, then it is not permissible for her to remain with him, and she must seek separation from him through khul' (divorce at the wife's instance, usually by returning the dower).

It is advisable to present the matter to the Sharia court or to trustworthy scholars.
