The question

How can one overcome the obsessions and delusions that lead to depression and a sense of despair concerning Allah’s mercy, and an intense fear of death and the Day of Judgment, by means of remembrance (dhikr), the Qur’an, and strengthening faith, and will Allah forgive sins and expiate them?

The answer

A believer's fear of his sins and their consequences is a sign of faith, but despairing of Allah's mercy is one of the gates of Satan and is forbidden. Therefore, a Muslim should seek refuge in Allah from Satan and remember the vastness of Allah's mercy, which precedes His wrath. To treat obsessive thoughts, it is recommended to supplicate persistently, frequently remember Allah, maintain the Dawn prayer (Fajr), rely on Allah, and repent from sins. Likewise, a Muslim woman should adhere to the legal head covering (hijab) because it is an obligation, and abandon ostentatious display (tabarruj), which is considered a major sin.
