What is the ruling on money found in the streets, and is it permissible to take it with the intention of searching for its owner in a non-Muslim country, while fearing accusation of theft?

We have clarified that there is no sin upon one who refrains from picking up a lost item (Luqatah) to protect his honor from accusation. As for a trivial amount of money that its owner would not pursue, it is permissible to pick it up and benefit from it without announcing it. However, if it is of value, it must be announced in places where its owner might be found. And if one refrains from picking it up to avoid evil, there is no sin upon him.
