Is it permissible to frequently read and listen to religious, political, social, or amorous poetry that is not forbidden, or is that disliked?

Listening to poetry that calls for religion, virtue, and social and political reform is permissible and may even be commendable. As for romantic poetry, the basic ruling is that listening to it is permissible, but it is disliked to overindulge in it unless there is a benefit in learning the Arabic language to understand the Qur'an, as it might be considered idle talk. It is better for a Muslim to listen to the Qur'an, ponder over it, and act upon it, as Allah Almighty says: "And when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy" and His saying: "So give tidings to My servants Who listen to speech and follow the best of it. Those are the ones Allah has guided, and those are the ones who possess understanding."
