Would the girl accept her suitor despite her family's disagreement with his family over the value of the dowry (Mahr) and the gifts (Shabka), and her family's desire for a higher amount, claiming that the offered amount is small and only fit for girls with a blemish?
The Shariah encourages choosing a husband who possesses religiosity and good character, not wealth, based on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: “If someone whose religiosity and character you approve proposes to you, then marry him.” Exorbitant dowries are blameworthy, and a low dowry is better and an indication of the wife’s blessings, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The most blessed of women are those with the easiest dowries.” Al-Shawkani mentioned that an easy dowry facilitates marriage and increases progeny, unlike a large dowry which restricts marriage to the wealthy. Therefore, it is advised to accept a man of good character and religiosity, and to convince family members to abandon boasting and extravagance in dowries.
